Biblical Roadmaps in the Parables | August 2024

The parables of Jesus are short stories that convey spiritual and moral lessons through metaphor and analogy. Each parable presents a kind of "roadmap" for understanding key aspects of the Kingdom of God, human behavior, and our relationship with God and others. Here’s a summary of the roadmaps presented by some of the most significant parables:

1. The Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:3-9, 18-23)

  • Roadmap: The response to the Word of God.

  • Key Lesson: The different types of soil represent different responses to the message of the Kingdom. The roadmap shows that fruitfulness in life depends on how one receives and nurtures God’s Word—whether one's heart is hard, shallow, distracted, or receptive.

2. The Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)

  • Roadmap: The path to neighborly love and mercy.

  • Key Lesson: This parable emphasizes the importance of showing compassion and kindness to all, regardless of social or ethnic boundaries. The roadmap is about going beyond societal expectations and loving others through action.

3. The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32)

  • Roadmap: The journey of repentance and forgiveness.

  • Key Lesson: This parable illustrates God’s unconditional love and forgiveness. The roadmap shows the process of repentance, returning to God after straying, and the joy of reconciliation.

4. The Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30)

  • Roadmap: Faithful stewardship and accountability.

  • Key Lesson: The parable teaches the importance of using one’s gifts and resources wisely. The roadmap highlights the need for diligent and responsible use of what God entrusts to us, with an emphasis on growth and accountability.

5. The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders (Matthew 7:24-27)

  • Roadmap: Building a solid foundation in life.

  • Key Lesson: This parable contrasts building on a strong foundation versus a weak one, symbolizing the importance of applying Jesus’ teachings in one’s life. The roadmap is about establishing one’s life on solid, enduring principles rather than on unstable or superficial values.

6. The Parable of the Mustard Seed (Matthew 13:31-32)

  • Roadmap: The growth of God’s Kingdom.

  • Key Lesson: The parable illustrates how the Kingdom of God starts small, like a mustard seed, but grows into something large and influential. The roadmap reflects the surprising and exponential growth of God’s work in the world.

7. The Parable of the Lost Sheep (Luke 15:3-7)

  • Roadmap: God’s relentless pursuit of the lost.

  • Key Lesson: This parable emphasizes God’s love for every individual and His desire to bring back those who are lost. The roadmap is about God’s initiative in seeking out and restoring the lost to the community.

8. The Parable of the Rich Fool (Luke 12:16-21)

  • Roadmap: The folly of materialism.

  • Key Lesson: The parable warns against placing one’s security in wealth and material possessions. The roadmap highlights the importance of being "rich toward God" and focusing on eternal values rather than temporary wealth.

9. The Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13)

  • Roadmap: Preparation for the Kingdom.

  • Key Lesson: This parable underscores the importance of being prepared for Christ’s return. The roadmap is about spiritual vigilance, readiness, and ensuring that one’s life is in order before God.

10. The Parable of the Wheat and the Tares (Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43)

  • Roadmap: The coexistence of good and evil until the final judgment.

  • Key Lesson: The parable illustrates how good and evil coexist in the world until the final judgment. The roadmap shows that God will ultimately separate the righteous from the wicked, but in the meantime, believers must live faithfully amidst challenges.

11. The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector (Luke 18:9-14)

  • Roadmap: The path to humility and true righteousness.

  • Key Lesson: This parable contrasts self-righteousness with genuine humility. The roadmap highlights that true righteousness comes from humility and repentance, not from self-exaltation or outward religious acts.

12. The Parable of the Vineyard Workers (Matthew 20:1-16)

  • Roadmap: God’s generosity and the equality of grace.

  • Key Lesson: This parable illustrates God’s grace and how His rewards are not based on human merit but on His generosity. The roadmap reflects the nature of God’s Kingdom, where all who are called receive His grace, regardless of their time of entry.

13. The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant (Matthew 18:21-35)

  • Roadmap: The necessity of forgiveness.

  • Key Lesson: This parable teaches the importance of forgiving others as we have been forgiven by God. The roadmap emphasizes the reciprocal nature of forgiveness and the spiritual danger of harboring unforgiveness.

14. The Parable of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl (Matthew 13:44-46)

  • Roadmap: The value of the Kingdom of God.

  • Key Lesson: These parables depict the Kingdom of God as something of supreme value, worth giving up everything else to obtain. The roadmap is about recognizing the incomparable worth of God’s Kingdom and committing fully to it.

Conclusion

Each parable provides a roadmap to understanding specific aspects of spiritual life, ethical conduct, and the nature of God's Kingdom. They guide readers in how to live according to divine principles, prepare for God’s Kingdom, and respond to God’s call in their lives. These roadmaps are both practical and spiritual, offering timeless wisdom for navigating life's challenges and opportunities in alignment with God’s will.

7 Days of Purposeful Prayer (Day 7)

Day 7: July 7, 2024

Theme: God wants all of our lives to matter

Scripture:

Ephesians 6:10-12 (KJV) Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Indeed, all of our lives already matter to the Lord, but He also wants us to have an impact. Lives are not empty containers, they are intended for His proposes. Unfortunately, we fill them with things that take His place. We then have to empty ourselves so that He may fill us.

It does not matter where you come from or what you look like. No lives matter more than others but God is equally in love with each of us. For this reason, He intended for us all to have a great impact, so long as we do it according to His will.

2 Timothy 2:20-21 (NASB) Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and some to honor and some to dishonor. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.

People ask why God does not intervene in this world, but I believe that intervention is happening. If anything He placed the power into vessels that do not know they are supposed to have great impact. As a result, we squander our lives until we are ready to be filled with His purpose. When we are ready He will use us to move the mountains of this life. Whether we are to speak to kings or become them, we owe all of our talents to the Lord.

2 Corinthians 4:6-7 (NASB) For God, who said, "Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves;

Prayer in Action:

The people of God need boldness but they cannot just be told to "be bold". They must hear from God personally to have confidence in His calling. Then we must obey and allow Him to move our lives into position. As we come closer and closer to that destiny we show signs that this is true;

  1. We declare "things that be not as though they are" in prayer.

  2. We boldly approach the throne of grace where God is seated and waiting to hear us.

  3. We assume our position in His will and destiny, knowing who we are.

  4. We work as obedient soldiers, expecting a reward from the Master.

I do not know what your role is in the plan of God but I know you have one. I do not know how God wants to use who you are but I can pray that you move into that quickly. If every life matters and God is not a liar, then we must command the things we see by the will of God. We must become not just vessels of honor but extended arms, hands, legs, feet, voices, and minds for God. We must have an impact on what is happening in this world, not just consume and spectate.

Matthew 17:20 (NASB) And He *said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.

Prayer in Unity:

And so with boldness we can and should pray on this final day. Move into not only your purpose but your use under the Lord. See yourself in His plan and talk to Him as if He is your Father!

"Heavenly Father, thank you for making me your child. As your child, I come to you and ask you to rule in the hearts of this nation's leaders. I ask you to comfort and to liberate those that are lost. I ask you to bring justice in greater measure to the people who need you. I ask that you speak to the hearts of this nation and cause it to repent so that you can renew your blessings over it.

We are so thankful for the authorities that you purpose to watch over us and pray they would govern with wisdom so that we might live peacefully. If not, let us walk in obedience to you first and have the courage to speak to them so they might obey your guidance on our behalf.

On this final day Lord, we ask that you seal our prayers and request as we wait for the deliverance we seek.

Amen!"

7 Days of Purposeful Prayer (Day 6)

Day 6: July 6, 2024

Theme: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

Scripture:

3 John 2-3 (KJV) Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.

Should we pray that all would prosper? Of course, we should, without hesitation. This is the legacy of being children of God and we should embrace it fully. So much so that prosperity flows onto all of those around us. Understand that the governance of this nation under the hands of righteous people will bring prosperity to all.

We can therefore pray for the prospering of all of the people of this nation, so long as we also acknowledge God as a nation. The two do not come separately. The people of God must therefore stand for what is right and promote that in all parts of our society. Why? Because when we do, all prosper.

Proverbs 29:2 (KJV) When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

This should give us the confidence to speak openly about the gospel. It is not political but clearly has moral and spiritual requirements for us to prosper. It is the truth and whether you like it or not we do not prosper when we disobey it. God is not mad at us, we are wayward and we therefore pay the price for rebelling against His truth. That truth is universal because He is God.

Prayer in Action:

Matthew 5:16 (KJV) Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Notice what this says about what happens when we lift the Lord. We become magnetic and our ways become contagious as we glorify God with our lives. People are not just drawn to us but they are drawn to God. The more people that call upon Him the more blessed our environment becomes. The more blessed the nation becomes. There is only a benefit to glorifying God, not a curse, ever.

Now ask yourself, "how do I glorify the Lord?" Let me share with you from my own experience, and encourage you to add to the list.

  1. I walk in honor of the commandments of God, as best I possibly can.

  2. I talk about what is pleasing to the Lord so people can hear my confession.

  3. I share the blessings of God in my life, giving glory to God for it all.

  4. I teach those who are hungry for the knowledge of God in their lives.

  5. I encourage people toward God's answers at all points.

  6. I love people like they matter because God shows me that I do.

  7. I comfort people so they know someone believes in their worth so they seek God.

  8. I study the things of God so they are ever on my mind and in my heart.

  9. I pray to the Lord, as the most important person in my life, and the keeper of my eternity.

I could go on but you get the point.

Matthew 6:33-34 (KJV) But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Prayer in Unity:

"Heavenly Father, we know that you want people to prosper, be healthy, be happy and be blessed so we confess that we should be a part of bringing that reality to as many people as we can through you! That means we must position ourselves to life you up no matter when or where you call us to do it. In glorifying you, we move ourselves out of the way so others can come close to you. That is what we are here for and we know that we must be intentional about it. Help us have the courage and the wisdom to do it lovingly and with confidence.

In accomplishing this goal, we ask that your Spirit guide our walk, our speech, and our touch. Let us shine bright with your light so that is what people see. Let us reach anyone you send us to, taking no care for our own biases and speaking out of your anointing. Give us power so that our gospel comes to them not in Word only, but in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much comfort because they know what manner of people we are in their lives, for their sakes."

1 Thessalonians 1:5-6 (KJV) For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:

7 Days of Purposeful Prayer (Day 5)

Day 5: July 5, 2024

Theme: Every good solution comes from God

Scripture:

Psalm 20:6-9 (KJV) Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright. Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call.

One of the reasons we need to be humble before God is so when we pray we try not to tell Him what to do. Our prayers are certainly to be petitions (pleadings as in court), presenting what we believe would help the situation, but not in an arrogant way.

You see, God is the one who knows the right answer to any question. He is the one who asked us to live according to His ways so that we would walk in His benefits. He neither sleeps nor closes His eyes, so He sees better than we ever could. He even knows the right sequences and timing for all things. Our prayer posture should be humbly seeking His direction even when we think we know the answer. That is because we will not know we don't know until He tells us His solution!

Psalm 147:5-6 (KJV) Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. The LORD lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground.

Reliance upon God's direction is a "non-negotiable". You will find that as you stay and pray until you can hear. You find that as you come and revisit the topic over time, patiently waiting for the answer. Then you are responsible for carrying out your part of it out or waiting for God to move. Think about your prayer this way;

  1. What is the issue?

  2. What has God already said about that?

  3. What is He continuing to say about it?

  4. What do I need to do to align with His will?

  5. Who can I agree with on it?

  6. How can we pray and act by faith to bring it to pass?

  7. How can I show others the way?

Prayer in Action:

Humility in prayer is active, not passive. We humble ourselves before God in full assurance that this is the only posture that works and it works faster and better than any other approach. We do not rail at God or against God but we come to the Father in awe of His love and power and in that place, we receive revelation and peace.

Speaking of peace, you should be able to honestly assess what is happening in this world, and still be at peace. You should be able to remain peaceful. That peace should give you confidence in the Lord and should quench the strife in your life. If we are going to transform the world it will not be by yelling at it all the time, but by loving it like Jesus!

How might this "humility" help you?

  1. It will make you less sure your answers are right, and open you to new possibilities

  2. It will make you less willing to fight with others, and more willing to discuss with them

  3. It takes away a sense of arrogance that puts you at odds with others

  4. It will open you to how others can help us achieve God's will together

I am becoming more convinced that a group of believers who can humble themselves before the Lord, get more solutions and wisdom from Him. They see more of His wisdom because they each receive it in subtly different ways but can lend it to one another. Few people I know can describe it, but it is in concert with the body that I have consistently seen it. It is why the church can and will overcome the gates of Hell.

Are you willing to submit your obedience to God's will? Are you willing to present your issues to God and let Him tell you what He thinks about how best to solve them? Then today let's do that together and pray for this nation and its people.

Prayer in Unity:

"Good morning Father, there are days that overwhelm us because they are evil. Help us to look squarely at them and then look humbly to you so we can understand what is underlying them. Let us not avoid the realities in our world, but let us seek you for the solutions to them. In our confessions may we boast in you and the power of your might.

Let us give thanks that we have a mighty God in heaven who rules over us all. Let us always seek your perspective as we seek your answers. Then let us begin the process of aligning our own lives to your will so we can be better witnesses of the truth.

God, we need your answers, not ours. We need your guidance, not our understanding. We call upon you to give us wisdom on how to align ourselves with your ways and promote that wisdom to the people we influence daily. Help us to have the courage to do that more and more. Amen!"

7 Days of Purposeful Prayer (Day 4)

Day 4: July 4, 2024

Theme: God loves and will save anyone (so I can pray for everyone)

Scripture: Revelation 14:6-7 (KJV) And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

Why do we look to heaven? Because that is a picture of the will of God. This is the destiny for the world and so when looking at that I can focus my life on those goals. Likewise, if I am looking for unity then God is the only one who knows how to accomplish that and what it will look when complete. Two major things come out of this perspective;

  1. Unity will only come as God rules over mankind

  2. Division is the result of sinful human nature and must be subdued

God has no favorites and this should encourage each of us we all have a place in His kingdom. If I walk after God I can have no favorites and when I do I need to recognize my partiality and work hard to remove it from my life. Partiality keeps us from praying properly. Partiality keeps us from loving equally. Partiality lets the devil in to ransack someone else's room when we are living in the same house. The house still gets robbed.

Prayer in Action:

Since love is active, we should be able to see it when it is in play. It should not be exclusive but expansive. Love is the heart of the gospel so that must mean we are to live our lives out of it. We must think through our actions and live in a way that corrects us first. Then we can love others more completely and hold them in high regard. We can stop praying for our "kindreds, and nations, and tribes" and then pray for our nation.

John 13:34-35 (KJV) A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

I believe when we pray for the good of others, our prayers are more aligned with the heart of God. We can and should "make our requests known", but we should also pray for one another. Let's do that today!

Prayer in Unity:

"Heavenly Father, we know that you love us, but we also know that you love all of us. In knowing that you love all of us we repent of having disregarded one another. We ask you to cleanse us from the biases and partiality that we all have so that we might become more like you in word and deed. May no favoritism enter our hearts as we pray but let us hear your heart and pray accordingly for all men.

Today, we pray that we become a part of helping this nation make a change. May we pray for those in authority as well as those who oppose us. May we decide that we have no enemies by Satan himself, and we will not allow him to continue to bring division into our world. To the extent that it is within our ability to do good, we choose to do good to anyone and everyone we can.

We also confess that unity will be wrought by your hand, and according to your standards and we submit our lives to that goal. We love you, Lord, because we know that you love us!"

7 Days of Purposeful Prayer (Day 3)

SOZO 7 Days of Prayer

Day 3: July 3, 2024

Theme: Prayer in unity is a mighty weapon

Scripture: Ephesians 6:11-12 (KJV) Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Too many of us refuse to engage in combating the evil of the day because we lack confidence in ourselves as Children of God. This means the advance of evil goes unchecked. This is also why things do not get better in the natural and we blame the victims for the crimes. That is not how God wants us to operate. We are here to bring the characteristics of the kingdom to the Earth in our time here.

You can see why God does not want us to engage in the same sinful ways. He knows that when we do, not only do we not do what is good, but we become part of what is bad. That is a double whammy! The devil is real and he is active, he has an agenda and he has the ability to sway us to act in agreement with it. We must be the "resistance". We must take the stand, and we must use the weapons He gave us.

Ephesians 6:13-14 (KJV) Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand, therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Don't argue with God in order to fit in, go along, or be trendy. He told you the days are evil so believe Him. Don't wake up and go about your day as if there is nothing to fight for, that is what being "lukewarm" is all about and people are destroyed in that kind of environment. If you need an agenda, fight for God's will. If you need motivation, read the Word of God. If you need validation then pray and listen to the Spirit.

Prayer in Action:

Think about how you apply this in your life right now. Feel the sense of urgency of the Lord to do something in the Spirit and stand with God.

Ephesians 6:18 (KJV) Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

  1. who can you pray for, that you know is lost or hurting today?

  2. what area of our nation's life needs intercession so that it improves?

  3. what do our leaders need to address that is not getting addressed adequately?

  4. where is pain and suffering most obvious that we can and should pray about?

Take time today to pray for each of these areas in your own words, and ways!

Certainly make your own list but join with the following partial list that I believe comes straight from God's heart. Because "it is written" we do not need to argue about it we just need to do it together.

  1. freedom from poverty and addiction for all the people of this nation

  2. open and honest discussion so that together we can solve the issues with our culture

  3. unity of the faith so not only would we come together but it would be "in Christ"

  4. Godly leadership over this nation so that we all would be blessed, together

Prayer in Unity (suggestion):

"Heavenly Father, we come together today to stand with you for the blessing of all of the people of this nation. No matter their origin, we pray that they would be people of virtue so this nation can prosper. May each of them come into a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ to fulfill the call on their own lives, but let them also sow life to the people around them.

Lord, we ask that you would quench the spirit of division and rebellion that is so very present so that we can come together to serve you. May the blessings we have not be taken for granted but may we confess boldly that all good things come from you. May we each and all repent of our issues before judging others, but as we walk upright we might lead others to righteousness.

Lord, forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, for You alone are Lord and everything in the universe is under your power, Amen!”

7 Days of Purposeful Prayer Introduction

Introduction

I am asking for our church to pray more intently for this nation. It is in a very obvious state of turmoil and that cannot be ascribed to one person issue, or group. We are in a spiritual condition  that calls Christians to intercede. I believe when God calls us to pray and we decide to pray together, we have great power to change the direction of the nation. We all know the following scripture as just that call to prayer.

2 Chronicles 7:14-15 (KJV) If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place.

Christians should neither ignore nor despair, because our God is great and so our impact can be mighty, not for our agenda but for God's will. We come into unity as we all draw close to God. Most people cannot imagine a world in unity but as a Christian I know that it is not only possible but commended by God. As such, we need to each put effort into praying, speaking, and working toward unity in our lives, in our relationships and in our nation.

Why pray?

I believe one of the main the reasons we pray is to bring peace and hope to the world. Not just for us, but for the people around us who may have little of either. That takes focus, effort, and unity. Join us with the heart for the world around us not just us.

Matthew 5:8-9 (KJV) Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

How to pray?

We have been given guidance how to pray because God wants us to do it confidently, and consistently. Prayer is one of those things that you prefect by doing it. Not only do we learn from one another, but we inspire one another as we do it together.

Philippians 4:6 (NASB) Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

What to pray for?

This is where a "prayer theme" comes from. We agree to an area of prayer so that we can be in unity about it, and we can have a greater impact praying together. Add to that the direction we get from scripture about the topic, and we can pray fervently at any and all times.

In this season, lets pray for peace, unity, and healing for the heart of America. Be willing to consider one another and bless one another so our country can prosper and remain free.

Believe that the body of Christ can align itself with God's will and thereby come into unity. Notice, the agenda must be the Lord's will in order to do so. We all need to lay down our own agenda's and take on the mission of God for peoples, nations, and this world. Only then can we pray powerfully enough to see all of it change. Only then will our prayers be magnified and empowered for the pulling down of strongholds.

Here are seven things that I have found that we can all pray over America, and this is the source of this 7-day devotional. Each day we will touch a topic below and apply it to our nation together.

  1. God rules over all of mankind

  2. Everything has a spiritual origin, everything is spiritual

  3. Prayer in unity is a powerful weapon

  4. God loves and will save anyone

  5. Every solution we need comes from God

  6. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness are God's ideas

  7. God has made all our lives to matter

7 Days of Purposeful Prayer (Day 1)

Day 1: July 1, 2024

Theme: God rules over all of mankind

Scripture: Psalm 22:27-28 (NASB) All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, And all the families of the nations will worship before You. For the kingdom is the LORD'S And He rules over the nations.

Day to day, it is easy to forget that God is still in charge. he has been from the beginning and will be until the end of days. Men do what they want daily and we think that God neither sees nor cares. We go about our business and rarely look up. We get really angry about others when they do things we disagree with, forgetting that God is still over it all.

This is why being reminded each day that God is still in charge and will never let go of that authority, does two things for our own hearts.

  1. we stop getting so angry when things do not go our way

  2. we go to Him for solutions in all things

Prayer in Action:

Here are some things we can pray for together.

  1. not only would we submit to His authority but also our nation

  2. that we would not grow weary (or angry) as we pray for His will for this nation

  3. we would be willing to let His will be done, not ours

Prayer in Unity:

"Heavenly Father we ask that you rule over this nation in all of its decisions. We want you to show us your will so we can pray for that together as a body. We ask that you correct us all so as we submit to you, we come into unity and can pray with power. Thank you for continuing to care for this nation and its blessings, may all of the people within her prosper and grow in their knowledge of who you are, so you get the glory for our blessings. Stay over us Lord, correct us, and guide us in your will, Amen!"

7 Days of Purposeful Prayer (Day 2)

Day 2: July 2, 2024

Theme: All things have a spiritual origin

Scripture: Hebrews 11:3 (NASB) By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.

I woke up early this morning and could hear God talking to me. It reminded me that what I see is not all there is. In fact, as Christians, the things that matter the most are spiritual things. That should make us spend time in spiritual endeavors knowing that these (spiritual) things bring great(er) results. Imagine if you began to realize that you have power to change what you see, especially when what you can see is disturbing? You do!

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (KJV) (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

This is why being reminded each day that all things are spiritual in nature and we have been given power over the spiritual things, does a few things for our hearts.

  1. we stop being spectators and we take action against what is evil

  2. we wake up charged up and ready to do something (spiritual) about injustice

  3. we trust God and refuse to have strife with the people in our lives (they are not the issue)

  4. we lean on God to give us wisdom about what we see in the natural

Prayer in Action:

Here are some things we can pray for together.

  1. we ask God to reveal to us what is underneath what we see

  2. we take up God's perspectives on everything we see

  3. we work together to build our understanding both naturally and spiritually

  4. we allow our passions to be ruled by God, not our flesh

Prayer in Unity:

"Heavenly Father we come to you today to understand what we are looking at in the natural in ways that reveal the spiritual. Open our spiritual eyes so we may comprehend the works of evil and the power of our prayers to defeat it. If we have passions, we lend them to you so that YOU can guide them and you have control of them. As we calm our spirits, let us see you better and follow you today as we pray.

Lord, we pray a blessing on this nation, not because it is perfect but because you are. Have mercy on our iniquities as a nation and as people. Let proper judgement begin in our hearts and let us admonish others as we chasten ourselves to follow you better. Let us bless and not curse, and allow our eyes to be opened to see. "

Who's your Daddy?

With all of this talk about the “patriarchy”, I find many people disparaging what exists for some mythical alternate universe that is supposed to be “better” but has never existed. Somehow the time-honored realities are no longer acceptable because we think we have a better idea. Having created nothing we believe we can recreate everything, and that is foolish.

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
— Romans 1:21-23 (NASB)

It is better to look at and come to understand not just the creation but the creator. When we do that we learn the “why”. We understand what purpose the Creator achieves by His actions and direction. Not unlike the children we raise, who start to question everything at some point in their lives, their ignorance is the very thing we need to overcome. They disagree when they lack understanding and that hurts them. So we teach them with as much patience and love as we can muster, as their parents.

The reality is that God put this world together and within that plan, He decided men would be placed at the head of families and also decided what a family looks like. His purpose was more than sex so if that is all you want you will miss the design of the family and fail to see the destiny that is held within it. It is the structure He chose as the best for mankind so instead of trying to dismantle it we need to honor and understand it.

Husbands love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.
— Ephesians 5:25-27 (NASB)

The family is a divine design. It is not to be mocked or abused, so we can find comfort in it, and when it is broken, refuse to throw it out but purpose to FIX IT! In fixing it we must eventually come to realize its design and purpose so we get the best of what it has to offer. Marriage is the best of relationships if we allow God to “order” it. In other words, we allow the author of the relationship to fix and finish it.

Our own children disagree when they lack understanding and that hurts them.
— Pastor Stephen Peele Sr.

The last time my car needed repair, I fixed it. I did not claim all cars are bad. I did not blame the car for its own brokenness, I went to the right place, got some tools, and I fixed it. Once back in working order, I continued to be blessed by it and purposed to maintain it properly. As different as a family is from a car, the principles are the same. When it is broken you fix it!

And so, when we look at our society we see critical things falling apart and those things creating pain for others. The family is one. There are many reasons why the family is disintegrating, but the trend is hurting many. You can see above that the statistics are telling us we are moving in the wrong direction when too many children wonder; “Who’s your daddy”. That is nothing to be proud of and we are all responsible in some way or other. So let’s all do what we know works, and ask God!

His answers will always be in His Word so start there. Come together with older couples and learn from their wisdom. Refuse to entertain “vain imaginations” so you do not get confused by nonsense. Lead others to the truth so they can prosper. Glorify God in your own lives and relationships. Find a church community committed to God’s Word, and willing to walk together humbly, and settle in!

Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be embittered against them. Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.
— Colossians 3:18-20 (NASB)

You may be disappointed that I spent so little time debating the benefits of a supposed matriarchy. That is because when I read the Creator’s words, and principles that is not what He designed for the family. It does not mean that a married woman is bound to subservience, but that God knew what He was doing so we should follow His lead. There is no debate.

Why are Christians so combative?

And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
— Matthew 11:12 (KJV)

For some, they believe Christians are fighting for or against something. It appears to them that we are causing problems. If we would sit down and shut up, things would be peaceful. We would all be able to come together. While there are a number of points to discuss, let’s discuss one of the assumptions to challenge from the Word of God. Is the Church the problem?

The first question is whether the situation is at peace or at rest. You might think the world is at rest, but the reality is that everything in history is moving. The story, in some ways, is still being written, although the outcomes are known by God. Not only that but the Church is moving too. Like you, it is learning, growing, and maturing so it is moving in relation to the world, even as the world moves! It is all in motion. We should expect friction.

The gospel, including the very words of Jesus Himself, says that we were born into a war zone!
— Pastor Stephen Peele Sr.

So it is appropriate to ask yourself who is causing this. Is it normal? What can we expect in the future? Will this stuff continue? Are Christians causing trouble, or is the world already in trouble? These are different ways of asking the same question, what the heck is going on?

Some things are improving while others get worse. The Bible says that Christians should be getting better (lighter) every day, and we know that the world is becoming increasingly dark as it denies God. The two are moving in opposite directions. If it appears that Christians are causing the problems, in many ways, we are responding to movement or trying to move in the opposite direction. An earthquake occurs when two pieces of ground move past one another in opposite directions. This is by design.

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
— John 16:33 (KJV)

To respond to this we need to read our Bibles, including the words of Jesus Himself. The gospel actually says that we were born into a war zone. Not only that but the spiritual war is between mortal enemies, God and the Devil (and his angels) and while God will win, we are still in a place where the battle is being fought.

So, what should we do?

  1. We discern the plan of God for this Earth, the Church, and eternity

  2. We explore the purposes of God for the CHURCH and participate

  3. We thank God for the Church and consider it the solution versus the problem

  4. We pray for our leaders both within and outside of the Church

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
— 1 Corinthians 3:16 (KJV)

Let us pray!

“Heavenly Father, we do not understand all of what you are doing but we believe what it is is good. Not only that but you can work all things together for good, for your children. Thank you for making us a part of your work in the kingdom, help us do what you are calling us to do!”

Why we need to talk about darkness

The contrast between light and dark

2 Peter 1:19 (KJV) We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

What I know about science tells me that light and dark are related. In fact, they contrast one another so that you can determine which is which. In the light, you can see the darkness, and in the darkness, you can see the light.

Some Christians wonder why we need to talk about both, and I would like to help you understand why. Importantly, it is not to run people off, but to help them find the truth, the light! They are already aware of the darkness, they see it every day. Running away from the darkness never causes it to leave, it just opens you to more of it. What people need is the will and the power to move more into the light. The proof of this is that Jesus told us that HE is the light!

Galatians 3:24-25 (KJV) Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

You will see in scripture that until we understood sin, we could not appreciate righteousness. Until the law was introduced, we could not achieve freedom. We needed God to show us what was bad in order for us to strive for what is good. We needed to understand the darkness in order to seek the light.

Of course, we need to help people become motivated toward good things, but we all inherently know what darkness is. The darkness is not something we discover because we can all see it in our own hearts and in the hearts of others. To look away is no solution, we must lean in and make it flee. What we need to learn is how to go from one to the other.

Isaiah 42:6-7 (KJV) I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

Now, you might also ask why we need to spend so much time in the darkness, and I would simply remind you that many people do not understand why they are in the darkness. No one is telling them that there is more light for them to live for. So the good news is not that darkness is not real, but that the light is more powerful. The fact of all of our lives is that we need to know the dark in order to move toward the light.

So, how do we balance the conversation? We should study the reality of both the darkness and the light, remind people why we need Jesus, and then lead them from the reality of the darkness to the power of the light!

God is in charge of both the darkness and the light…
